Democracy Volunteers’ election experts have been in Iceland assessing the municipal elections across the country.
The team of five, including Ben Sharpe and Kim Kippen, both experienced election administrators from the UK and Canada respectively, have been assessing early voting systems in Iceland and the use of ID as part of the voting process.
Being in Iceland for a week, the team met with the Icelandic Electoral Commission, and with other observer groups including parliamentarians from the Council of Europe and the Norwegian Government.
Commenting on the deployment of observers from Democracy Volunteers, director of Democracy Volunteers, John Ault said; ‘This was the first time that Iceland has received election observers and assessing the process has helped our team to understand some of the ways that best practice from other countries can help the UK to improve our elections.’
‘Our hosts at the Icelandic Election Commission, and those running the elections across the country, have welcomed us and been very open to our work and interested in discovering our findings. We will report back to them in the coming weeks.
